The Reclaiming Of Wisdom

The Restoration Of The Feminine In Christianity

This book is an overview of the Wisdom Tradition in Christianity from its emergence in Palestine, out of primeval goddess worship, through its influence on the interpretation of Jesus of Nazareth and the evolution of the Creeds. It follows the tradition of Sophia, the feminine metaphor for God, through the writings of the Medieval church to her eclipse at the Reformation. The second half of the book looks at the persistence of the tradition on the fringes of the church and in Eastern Orthodoxy. The final chapter discusses the significance of Sophia for religion today: for women; as a cultural bridge in inter faith dialogue and as a basis for a spirituality of the earth.
