Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction is an age-old method of soul care. All the major religions teach that for a person seriously to progress in the spiritual life it is essential that they are under the guidance of someone of experience who has themselves received such guidance.

This has always been a wise precaution to keep the seeker safe and on track and it remains a solid, gentle and valuable route to spiritual growth. Spiritual mentoring is not generally known outside of a few particular sections of the church.  But these days as more and more people are engaging with spiritual practices, within and especially outside of the church, having someone to mentor, chat over things with and feel understood is a really useful support.

Obviously, spiritual direction sits within the Christian ethos but not everyone in ministry is either trained or interested in this aspect of their calling. Individual spiritual care is one of the few Christian ministries that has not historically, been the reserve of the clergy or even laymen; women have traditionally been recognised as valuable in this role. Clearly it is not a role that can be taught along with other subjects, simply as part of the curriculum. Spiritual direction is not learned from a book, it requires a different kind of dedication, along with age and experience.

I had the great good fortune to be brought up in a church where attention to spiritual growth was the norm so my life has always been directed in this way. I am happy and prepared to embark on the journey with other serious travellers.

Spiritual Direction is not something that can be learned from a book, it requires a different kind of dedication, along with age and experience.
